Bay Boss allows shops to set up their tax in two different ways; Simple and Advanced. Simple is better if you charge the same tax percentage for all work done at the shop and only need to choose what items (parts, tax, labor) to charge tax on. Advanced, is better if you need to set different tax rates for items depending on the work done or who the customer is. Example you have retail sales that charge a set rate on Parts, but ICC rates are excluded for parts.

Simple Tax Mode settings

  • Tax Rate: Set the tax rate percentage you want to apply to Work Order totals. This will only apply to Customer’s whose “Is Tax Exempt” is set to “No”.
  • Tax Parts Only: If you want to tax Parts, set this to Yes. Selecting No will ignore tax on Parts.
  • Tax Labor Also: If you want to tax Labor also, set this to Yes. Selecting No will ignore tax on Labor.
  • Tax Fees: If you want to tax Fees, set this to Yes. Selecting No will ignore tax on Fees.

Advanced Tax Mode settings

Advanced Tax Mode allows you to create multiple Tax Rates for your customers and choose the appropriate tax rate for each type of sale.

To start, click on “Create Tax Rate” button in the top right of the screen. This will open a new blank Tax Rate. Give it a name that will make sense to you. You will see this name when you select the specific Tax Rate from the Work Order.

Set the tax rate percentages for each item (Parts, Labor, Fees). Optionally, you can make one Tax rate “Default”. This will make the defaulted tax rate appear on each new Work Order created. You can always change this from inside the Work order to any of your defined tax rates.
